About Us

Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is a German Political Foundation, funded by the German Parliament.

As a global think tank with more than 80 country and regional offices we respond to the growing regional and global importance of secure and climate save energy systems.

In 2015 we have established a new regional project “Energy security and Climate Change Asia-Pacific” (RECAP) in Hong Kong SAR, as we believe that climate and energy are among the biggest challenges for many Asian countries in the coming decades.

We support new ideas for a more sustainable way of living and invite decision makers from politics, business and society in the region and from Europe to develop new paths of development.

We organize international congresses and workshops; provide scholarships and fund research programmers and publications in Asia-Pacific to build platforms for exchange.

CLIMATE AND ENERGY: CHALLENGES IN ASIA-PACIFIC

Many regions in Asia-Pacific show enormous growth: population increases very rapidly; changing production and new consumption habits go along with a dramatically rising demand in energy. However, fossil and nuclear energy remain the main energy sources – having already heavily damaged climate and environment – threatening future developments in Asia-Pacific and leading to heavy conflicts on resources.

Governments, society and business have recognized the urgent need for an “energetic transformation” and seek for new development models.

Europe and Germany are preferred dialogue partners for developing and implementing new sustainable approaches in the field of urbanization, traffic and industrial upgrading. Germany is a leading actor in the global energy and climate politics and decided to completely rely on renewable energies until 2050. Through its “Energiewende” (energy turn), Germany aims at drastically lowering the emission of climate-damaging greenhouse gases and reducing its dependence on imported fossil energy sources. Our country can build on a long tradition of innovation power in the field of eco-friendly, efficient and renewable energies.

Yet, more favorable economic frameworks and conditions for the use of renewable energies have to be created. As a leading international actor in the area of environment policy, we engage very much in the field of multilateral and bilateral development cooperation as well as the foreign affairs and security policy.

THE RECAP PROJECT GOALS

Sustainable energy supply and an effective climate protection are the basis for future prosperity and development of the region – and no obstacle to further economic and social development.

Asia-Pacific offers multiple opportunities for the development of sustainable energy systems. RECAP does not supply ready-made solutions but aims at contributing to the development of tailor-made solutions. We are convinced that all relevant groups of the society shall be integrated in the processes of planning and decision making and the discourse shall be conducted across national and regional borders. Existing intraregional networks such as Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) or transnational associations of cities have to be strengthened and bridges between Europe and Asia to be build.

OUR APPROACH

  • We aim at decision makers in Asia and Pacific in politics, society and business to strengthen their awareness for sustainable energy and climate policies.

  • We follow the transformation of existing energy systems and the progress of climate protection and support regional cooperation among Asian countries.

  • We provide background information and in-depth-analysis of recent developments in the field of energy and climate.

  • We cooperate with renowned national and international organizations in politics, society and academia and support the exchange with German and European partners.

  • We are part of a global network and closely cooperate with the KAS Regional Programmed on Energy Security and Climate Change in Latin America and Africa.
